One of the most profound, deeply rewarding, and effortless forms of worship (Ibadah) blessed to the Ummah of Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) is the recitation of Durood Shareef (Salawaat).
Unlike other forms of worship that require physical exertion, specific times, or strenuous effort, sending Salawaat upon the Prophet (ﷺ) can be done from the comfort of your home, while walking, or even while working. It is a spiritual “meter” that constantly runs, elevating a person to become a Muqarrib (close servant) of Allah (SWT).
Based on the insightful teachings of Hazrat Maulana Abdul Hamid Ishaq (Daamat Barakaatuhum), this complete guide explores the monumental status of the Prophet (ﷺ), the guaranteed acceptance of Durood, and the incredible Duroods you should recite daily and specifically on Fridays (Jumu’ah).
The Exalted Status and Position of Nabi (ﷺ)
To truly appreciate Durood Shareef, we must first understand who we are sending it upon. Allah (SWT) states in the Quran: “We have raised you (O Nabi) to a most noble and honorable position.”
When Allah Himself elevates the Prophet (ﷺ), human intellect cannot comprehend his true rank. Consider these profound examples of his status:
The Attachment of Rasulullah (ﷺ) with Allah
When Sayyidina Adam (AS) descended to the earth, he wept for 40 years in repentance. After 40 years, he made a Du’a: “O Allah, I ask You through the Sadaqah and blessings of the name of Muhammad (ﷺ) to forgive me.” Allah (SWT) granted him immediate forgiveness and asked how he knew of Muhammad (ﷺ) before he was even created. Adam (AS) replied that when he was in Jannah, he saw the Kalimah written on the Arsh (Throne). He realized that whoever’s name is attached to Allah’s name must be the greatest of all creation. In the Kalimah (La Ilaha Illallah Muhammadur Rasulullah), Allah has eternally attached the Prophet’s name to His own. Our Imaan is incomplete until we testify to both.
The Azaan, Iqamah, and Salaah
A child’s birth is welcomed with the Azaan and Iqamah, both of which are incomplete without the mention of the Prophet (ﷺ). Even in our daily Salaah, while we praise Allah in Ruku and Sujood, our prayer is considered incomplete until we sit in Attahiyat and recite Durood Shareef (Durood-e-Ibrahim).
A Beautiful Poem: Ulama have stated that while many great poems have been written in love for the Prophet (ﷺ), the simplest and greatest is: “In brief, after the exalted position of Allah, you (O Muhammad) are the greatest.”
Respect: The Foundation of Deen
The Sahabah (RA) were the absolute masters of respect. When the Quranic verse regarding the Prophet’s elevation was revealed, they humbly told him, “You would know the meaning better.” Their respect for him was unparalleled.
Unfortunately, today’s Ummah has lost this respect. A young student today can name countless soccer players and celebrities, but if asked about the names of the Prophet’s (ﷺ) wives, children, or the Asharah Mubasharah (the 10 companions promised Paradise), they are completely blank!
We claim to be lovers of the Prophet (ﷺ), yet we hardly even know his names. While we commonly know him as Muhammad and Ahmad, there are actually 360 names of the Prophet (ﷺ) (as written on the front wall of Masjidun Nabawi). Knowing his names and his life story breeds true respect. As the famous sayings go:
- “One who has respect will achieve something.”
- “One who is disrespectful will achieve nothing.”
- “One with evil character will receive an evil share.”
Tasawwuf (spirituality) is entirely a lesson in respect—respecting your elders, your teachers, your wealth, and the Sunnah of the Prophet (ﷺ).
Durood Shareef in the Light of the Quran and Hadith
The Quranic Command (The Ultimate Business Partnership)
Allah (SWT) declares in Surah Ahzaab (Ayah 56): “Undoubtedly Allah and all His angels are sending salutations upon the Nabi. O you who believe, send your Salawaat upon him and greet him with the Islamic way of greeting.”
In this verse, Allah offers us a share in an incredibly profitable “spiritual business.” The major partners in this business are Allah and His angels, who are continuously (indicated by the Arabic present/future tense Yusalloona) sending Salawaat. Who in their right mind would reject an offer to join a business partnership with Allah?
The Hadith of the Miser
The Prophet (ﷺ) warned: “A miser is he who, when my name is mentioned in his presence, does not send salutations upon me.” (Tirmidhi)
To understand this misery, consider two stories:
- The Lantern Miser: An old man walked halfway to the Masjid and walked all the way back home just to tell his wife to blow out the lantern to save paraffin. When his wife asked if he wore out his shoes by walking back, he proudly said, “No, I took them off and carried them under my arm!” We laugh at this man, but failing to recite Durood when hearing the Prophet’s name is an even greater misery.
- The Fly-Sucker: A man was eating soup when a fly fell in. The fly managed to escape, but the man caught it, sucked the soup off its wings, and said, “You can fly away but you won’t take my soup.”
As miserly as these people are, the absolute worst miser is the one who hears the blessed name of Muhammad (ﷺ) and deprives himself of the massive rewards of reciting Durood.
The Guarantee of Acceptance of Durood Shareef
Sayyidina Umar (RA) said: “A person’s Du’a is suspended between the heavens and the earth for as long as he does not recite Salawaat upon Nabi (ﷺ).”
When you cry during a Du’a, it is like receiving a receipt that Allah has accepted it. However, reciting Durood Shareef is an audited, guaranteed receipt. Even if your heart is hard and you cannot shed a single tear, starting, pausing in the middle, and ending your Du’a with Durood guarantees its acceptance.
While our daily actions (A’maal) can be accepted or rejected by Allah, Durood Shareef is 100% accepted by Allah, regardless of your intention, condition, or location (though using it for worldly show-off is frowned upon).
The Extraordinary Benefits of Reciting Durood
Moulana Abdul Ghani Phoolpuri (RA) beautifully explained that reciting Durood Shareef hits two targets with one stone:
- You are making the Zikr (remembrance) of Allah.
- You are making the Zikr of the Prophet (ﷺ).
By doing so, you place yourself directly between two Kareems (Noble Beings): Allah (SWT) and Rasulullah (ﷺ).
Who is ‘Al Kareem’? (The 4 Beautiful Meanings)
Allah’s attribute of being Al Kareem has four staggering implications for us:
- He gives without us being worthy: Like a villager who accidentally walks into a modern corporate office and is handed a high-paying job despite having zero qualifications. Allah grants us His mercy even when our deeds don’t deserve it.
- He gives without us asking: Allah gave us eyes, family, wealth, and most importantly, Imaan, without us ever having to beg for it.
- He gives beyond our desires: We work in this Dunya for 60-70 years, and in return, Allah grants us an eternal, pure, and unimaginable Jannah forever.
- He gives without fear of His treasures diminishing: If Allah granted the entire world their wildest desires a million times over, His treasures wouldn’t decrease even by a drop compared to the ocean.
When you recite Durood, you are connecting yourself to this infinite generosity!
Which Durood Shareef Should You Recite?
You don’t always need to recite lengthy Duroods. You can easily start small and build a daily habit.
- The Shortest Durood:
Sallallahu Alaihi Wa Sallam(صَلَّى اللّٰهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّم) - The Shortest Taught by the Prophet (ﷺ):
Sallallahu Alan Nabiyyil Ummiyyi(صَلَّى اللّٰهُ عَلَى النَّبِيِّ الْأُمِّيِّ)
Action Plan: Set a daily target. Start with 10 times in the morning and 10 in the evening. Slowly increase it to 25, 50, and then 100. It only takes 3-4 minutes to recite it 100 times!
Two Extremely Valuable Duroods for Friday (Jumu’ah)
Friday (Jumu’ah) is the most virtuous day to increase your recitation of Durood. Here are two highly rewarding Duroods to memorize:
1. The “Millionaire” Durood
It takes only 3 seconds to recite, but its rewards are staggering:
“Allahumma Salli Alaa Muhammadin wa Aalihi Alfa Alfa Marrah.” (O Allah, send salutations upon Nabi and upon his family a thousand, thousand times.)
A thousand times a thousand is one million! If you recite this just a few times, you are accumulating billions of rewards in minutes.
2. The 80-Years Forgiveness Durood (After Asr on Friday)
Recite this Durood 80 times specifically after the Asr prayer on Friday, before standing up from your place or speaking to anyone:
“Allahumma Salli Alaa Muhammadinin Nabiyyil Ummiyyi Wa Alaa Aalihi Wa Sallim Tasleema.”
The Reward: The reward of 80 years of Ibadah (worship) is credited to your account, you are elevated by 80 stages in Jannah, and 80 years of your minor sins are instantly forgiven! This takes approximately 4 minutes to complete.
Final Thoughts & Du’a
When the real balance sheet of life is presented in the grave, the millions of dollars we chased in the Dunya will be completely useless. The only currency that will matter is the 3 seconds you spent reciting Durood Shareef, your Salah, and your good character.
Even in your spare time—after finishing your daily Tilawah (Quran recitation) or while doing chores—keep your tongue moist with Durood Shareef. Recite it not just as a duty, but with profound love for the Prophet (ﷺ).
May Allah (SWT) grant us all the Taufeeq (ability) to recite Durood Shareef regularly with immense love, enthusiasm, and feeling. May He grant us steadfastness and accept it from every one of us. Ameen.
